In contrast to Freud who considered dreams the royal road to the unconscious, dream interpretation is an important psychoanalytical technique. Psychoanalysis focuses on the meaning of dreams by placing them in the context of the relationship between history and the dreamers.

To understand the meaning of dreams one must know that dreams are not mere impressions, snapshots, or pictures of the days one experiences. Dreams are not a mere imprint, snapshot or reflection of that day in experience.

The analysis of dream symbols to assign meaning has become a popular source of entertainment and self-reflection in popular culture.
